Vegan Martha

Channeling my inner Martha vegan-style! Martha is all things good. Do not be intimidated by her awesome greatness, fearsome as it is. You must aspire to be more like her. Remember: there is no excuse for a store bought ring pillow. Seriously, this blog is just to show doubters what a vegan family eats.

Welcome 2010-style

Welcome to Vegan Martha, newly refurbished and recommitted. I plan to post regular pictures of what my family eats, so be prepared.

I'm back - with some food pics for you

I’ve been absent for the last little bit – kind of fell off the blogging wagon, if you will. I think the anticipation and aftermath of seeing Martha dressed as a black cat for Halloween did me in. She even had cat eyes with the evil slits and all that. Apparently the set designer for Cats (the broadway show) did her costume for her. Natch.

This is the Cinnamon Apple French Toast I made recently for breakfast. Needless to say the little monsters did not want to eat it, but the grownups in the house thought it was FANTASTIC. Some morning, when kerplopis is not bugging me, crying, or full of poop, I am going to count how many times Martha says “fantastic” in one show. It’s got to be like 50 at least. She almost never says “good thing” anymore. I guess like her theme song says, she’s not the same girl she used to be.

This is the Spicy Tofu Bento Bowl I made for dinner recently. Also not for the wee ones, but quite good. There’s a mound of rice on the bottom. Knitting news in my next post. I have shed some projects, added others – very busy.

Honey, it's Indian tonight

Much knitting grumpiness has been afoot. I finished the Geometric Scarf, only to discover that it is just too short. I need more yarn. Of course, I bought this yarn like over 2 years ago, so I'm not going to find the same dye lot again. Sigh. At somepoint, I need to find some baby free time to go downtown to my favorite local yarn store and see if they have a skein that is close enough. Or I need to just frog the whole thing and find a different gift for this person. Sigh. This never would have happened to Martha.

Last night I made a lovely dinner: Basmati Rice with garam masala green beans, masoor dal curry, and mung dals. So very good. In the picture is a little pickle on the side for added heat. I make all my food pretty mild so the wee ones can eat it too. Even the criminal ate it up last night, and kerplopis (who is almost one) ate the beans!

Butternut squash seeds - who knew?

that they are even yummier than pumpkin seeds? Well, they are. I bought a couple of organic butternut squashes today for the wee baby, and scooped out the seeds before baking them. Sprayed a cookie sheet with a little olive oil. Sprinkled on a little salt, baked for 10 minutes at 350 degrees F. Delicious!!! Even the 5 yr old princess and 3 yr old criminal kept eating them. I would post a pic, but they were gone too fast. I highly recommend it. It's a good thing!

A quick google search will tell you a lot about the great nutritional properties of pumpkin seeds, and I would guess that the profile of butternut squash seeds would be similar. To think for years I tossed squash seeds in the compost!

Knitting is moving along. I am not moving along. Still wearing crazy boot action. Missed Martha today, will miss her again tomorrow. Not a good thing.
